Medical & Teaching Projects, Livingstone
Typical schools in Livingstone work on a system known as ‘hot-seating’. Having too many children to accommodate, and shortages of staff and facilities, they run two or even three school sessions per day.
Volunteer involvement in Livingstone since the projects’ formation in 2005 has had a heart-warming impact on the local community. This culminated recently with the following message:
“As a department, we truly appreciate your dedication and hope you recognise, as we do, the valuable role you play in building brighter futures for Zambia’s next generation. Thank you for your continuing support. It is through the positive efforts of organisations like yours that we can change a lifetime for a child in need…”
Zambian Ministry of Sport, Youth and Child Development.
The Foundation plans to assist with providing the resources for development initiatives within both the Medical and Teaching projects. We work closely with the Zambian Ministry’s of Health, Education and Sports Development to support and where possible provide funding to develop programmes in collusion with the local government authorities.
Providing educational materials and medication for the Home Based Care work, as well as support to the Old Peoples Home and staff support at the four clinics that volunteers are involved with will alleviate many of the stresses and strains of understaffing and insufficient resources for health care. In the classrooms of local community schools, our support will also alleviate short-staffing issues, and have positive spin-offs for the standard of education as a whole. Volunteer assistance will support goals to expand on the Adult Literacy Club and Reading Club that are already established, and financial support from Happy Africa will allow for the expansion of local facilities such as school buildings.
