Mwandi Community Farm

Back in December last year we started by digging the 100 square metre land with the help of the local community and our volunteers. We then planted the first maize seeds in neat rows filling the space.

Three months later the maize was ready to harvest and David (the chairman for Mwandi farm) brought some corn to the volunteer house, which was promptly consumed that evening! We bought materials for a small guard hut; to provide security for the farm and help to keep the elephants at bay! Local labourers were hired to dig a well and we now have access to water for the land!

Seeds for tomatoes and peppers will be planted in the next few weeks. We also plan to help David and the community to install a proper irrigation system to help keep the land well watered.

Ultimately the farm will support itself, providing a sustainable source of food for the community of Mwandi.
