Livingstone’s Got Talent

Livingstone certainly did show us that they had talent!

The Happy Africa Foundation and African Impact hosted their annual school Talent Show, held at Bharats Sports Ground in Livingstone and attended by 14 schools.

The schools had each been asked to prepare a short sketch under the theme “Encouraging Hard Work” in line with our project aims of helping children to achieve through our Sponsor a Child Programme, after school, art and reading clubs and helping the community help itself to maintain income generated activities. We weren’t disappointed and everyone had been practicing hard to put on an excellent show with a mixture of traditional dance, singing, poetry and acrobatics on display.

The afternoon was hosted by Memory Mundia (Sponsor a Child Co-ordinator with The Happy Africa Foundation and Brave Sikangila (Medical Liaison with African Impact). They both kept the show running smoothly and to time which is no mean feat!

One after the other the schools performed to a packed audience (including Mr Mwemba representing the Ministry of Education and Mr Pumulo and Mr Pelekelo from the Provincial Sports Committee) with high energy, professionalism and confidence. Not even the short rain shower could dampen anyone’s enthusiasm.

There was stiff competition between the schools which did not make it easy for our six judges, but in the end it was Maria Assumpta Basic School who came out as the winner with their beautiful choir. Linda High School was second with their very energetic traditional dance and Linda West Basic School came third with their moving poetry.

However, no one went away empty handed. All participating schools were given a box of donated goodies. It is our way of fairly distributing our donated gifts that are given throughout the year by our volunteers and also to celebrate the partnership between the Happy Africa Foundation and African Impact and the schools that we work with.

The African Impact Volunteers played a big part in the talent show; not only on the day with setting up, acting as judges and also for their very touching comments on why they love volunteering in Zambia, but also behind the scenes in the run up to the show; making posters and sorting out all the donations and packing them into the boxes for the schools.

A special thank you goes to our sponsors MTN for providing umbrellas and a gazebo, to Shoprite for donating the juice and biscuits to all the performers and to Bharats Sports Complex for letting us use the grounds. MUVI TV was also present so watch out for the showing on the local TV.

Our biggest thanks of course goes to all the hard working pupils who took part – start getting ready for next year’s show as we hope it will be even bigger than this years!
