Baby Ruth

Livingstone case study – Baby Ruth

Since we met baby Ruth way back in last October, our hearts have been well and truly won over by this amazing little girl.

On a routine home based care visit with community volunteers, baby Ruth was identified in Ngwenya, one of the poorest compounds in Livingstone. Our volunteers recognised that Ruth and her mother were both in desperate need of intervention. With the help of Katie and Brave, our medical coordinators, we were able to get both Ruth and her mother, Gertrude admitted into Livingstone’s only hospice.

Baby Ruth is HIV positive and has TB. Her mother is also HIV positive and is suffering with the symptoms of TB. Ruth (or Ruthie as she is known to her many surrogate carers) has spent much of her life in and out of Livingstone’s hospice. The hospice is doing an amazing job of providing much needed love and care to baby Ruth. Without their constant and continued care Ruth would not be the healthy, happy little girl that she is today.

A big thank you to all of our wonderfully generous volunteers that have been an important part of Ruth’s journey back to good health. You have provided much needed essential gifts for Ruth, but most importantly you have interacted, played, laughed and loved this inspirational little girl.
