On the 18th July, THAF ran the 2009 Livingstone to Victoria Falls ‘fun run’. A very exciting day! Both Lucy and Rosie completed the run in under an hour even winning a trophy!

Victoria Blackwell-Hardie from the UK shares her thoughts on volunteering at the medical and community project in Kenya.
Without sounding trite, living in Africa and volunteering in this way has profoundly influenced my
perspectives and outlook on life. I re-evaluated my personal relationships, the way I interact with
people, the things I value, my approach to material possessions, and my overall career goals. To say I
loved living there would be an understatement.

“On behalf of the students and the teachers of the Ross School that worked in your Mozambique project, I would like to thank you and commend your organization for the excellent program you offered us.
I would like to commend African Impact for the meaningful programs they offer. From building the orphanage and interacting with the kids, to visiting the school, to the canoe trip, and the challenges each of us had to face and overcome, this has truly been a life-changing experience that has marked all of us for the rest of our lives. Aja Munsell from the USA shares his feedback on volunteering at the lion rehabilitation project in Victoria Falls
I feel like I’ve gained some really valuable insight into an amazingly different culture. There is such a heart to Africa, and all the people that live here have an inner life that you really don’t encounter a lot in the rest of the world. Or at least in America, I guess. I feel like my trip here has made me want to run out and experience the rest of the world, and I knew that I wanted to travel before but I didn’t realize how much. I also feel like I’ve gained the confidence to travel by myself after having seen how well it went in Africa. I think I’d really like to work with animals too, having gotten to know the lions and how much fun it is to be around them. I’m sorry I could talk about how Africa has changed me forever, but it just wouldn’t fit on this sheet.

Did you have any concerns before traveling to Africa? Can you suggest anything more that we could have done to ease these concerns?
I think you could make it more clear how safe it is here as I was a little worried about how safe we were going to be, but when I got here you can see you are perfectly safe.

What were some of the highlights of your placement with us?
I think the highlight of my trip with you was the kids they are great and appreciate everything that is done for them, also it is so rewarding on a Friday to hand out the certificates to the people who pass the HIV test and to know that you have made a difference to at least on persons life

Could you please explain your true feelings and thoughts about this Program? What do you think you gained from your volunteer experience?
I think this project is great, you have done so much for the community and its clear they appreciate everything you have done for them and what is to come. I have gained so much from this project coming here is like going to another world and it opens your eyes to so much, I have loved every minute.

Were you given sufficient training in terms of instructions for the tasks and duties you were involved in? I have the feeling that I was surrounded by a very professional staff. Enough info before a task and if I had any questions, they were immediately answered.

What were some of the highlights of your placement with us?
Visiting Hwange National park and the red cross were great. But also experience the culture in this country (and the kindness of the people) was wonderful.

Could you please explain your true feelings and thoughts about this Program? What do you think you gained from your volunteer experience?
The whole 4 weeks I was in Zimbabwe, I had a great time. The work that everyone does is great and necessary. For the people in the village (red cross, human elephant conflict etc.), for animals and nature.
ALL members of the staff are polite and friendly. And even in this difficult situation they keep smiling. ‘The work’ I did was great and I learned a lot. Not only from the people had I met, but also from the nature and animals. Really a place to return to. Thank you!
