Medical Support Project, St Lucia

The St. Lucia Medical Project seeks to aid rural communities struggling against South Africa’s HIV epidemic through medical outreach, support and supplies. We work with a group of local home carers by providing medical assistance, clinic pick-ups and drop-offs as well as care in the home such as cleaning, home repairs and subsistence farming for ailing patients.

Volunteers are involved in reducing the strain on nurses at the busy local clinic, which is regularly overrun with patients being treated for HIV-related illnesses, as approximately 70-80% of the community’s population is HIV-positive.

Finally, we facilitate much-needed support groups in two communities, which aim to empower members who are affected by HIV through friendship, education and gardening and craft-making groups.

The Happy Africa Foundation is helping to raise funds to provide African Impact volunteers with the ability to continue much-needed services to a community battling against the HIV epidemic. On a practical level, volunteers are also in need of basic medical equipment such as gloves, plasters, bandages, antiseptic cream, adult nappies and paracetamol.
