Inkanyezi Creche Development Project, St Lucia
Inkanyezi Crèche is in the Dukuduku area of Khula and caters for children aged 0 – five years old. The crèche was established in 2010 by Gugu Gumede and her son and is now run by the two of them with the help of another local lady. The crèche is not registered and so neither the staff nor the school receive any funding from the government. Approximately 26 children regularly attend the crèche, however many more would come if the crèche was developed to ensure a comfortable and safe environment for the children. Many of the parents have concerns that the crèche is too small and unsecure for their children to go to. The building itself is tiny; the wooden structure measures just eight by five metres.
We plan to develop Inkanyezi Creche so it is able to look after more children, in a safe, healthy environment as well as helping to establish a longer term plan to ensure the crèche can run itself independently.
Stage One
To construct a new classroom block; including a bedroom for the very small babies, a kitchen, store room and staff room. This will provide a bigger, safer building, made from concrete blocks and cement as opposed to the traditional wooden materials. With the help of volunteers we will also start clearing space for the crèche’s vegetable garden. This will enable the crèche to generate much needed income for equipment and supplies and for the crèche’s general upkeep.
Stage Two
Provide two water tanks, to ensure that the crèche always has running water to cope with the intermittent municipality supply. Build male and female latrines and provide furniture for the new classroom block.
Stage Three
Construction of a practical room for the children’s activity classes, such as art and crafts, as well as a nursery for the smaller children. Building the outdoor shelter for the children during playtime.
Stage Four
The construction of a security fence around the perimeter of the school, (approximately 900 square metres) and a small hut for the crèche’s watchman will be built at the entrance to the creche.
