Health & Education Centre in Livingstone, Zambia
Nakatindi Health & Education Centre
Nakatindi School caters for the vulnerable and orphaned children from the Dambwa and Nakatindi communities. Currently, there are three permanent structures and four mud huts for the 450 students. The Happy Africa Foundation’s newest project is to build a health and education center at the school to be used by Nakatindi residents and surrounding communities. The centre will provide additional classroom space for the overcrowded school, a computer center, guidance/health office and library.
Computer Lab
Computers are becoming increasingly important for Livingstone’s workforce and computer literacy is a rare and valuable skill. Ten computers will be available for students and community members. African Impact volunteers will teach computer literacy courses to help those seeking basic skills to help their job search and enhance the educational opportunities available to the student.
Health and Guidance Office
The school needs a space for student counseling and care, particularly for HIV positive students. A trained member of staff will use this space to monitor the health and growth of students through individual consultations and safeguard sensitive records. Furthermore, the Nakatindi Home Based Care team will use the center to coordinate their outreach in the community. The space will be ideal for them and other health based community organizations to come together towards the common goal of caring for Nakatindi’s sick and vulnerable.
Library
Lacking a library and access to books in the community, this valuable resource will provide students with access to a wealth of knowledge across all subject areas. The library will house textbooks and a variety of fiction and non-fiction material. After proper training, a community teacher will run the library and African Impact volunteers will use it to conduct reading clubs and adult literacy courses. The vision is for the library to open seven days a week so that the books will be accessible to many of the surrounding communities as well.
Main Hall
The main part of the building, this large hall will be used for many different activities including: school functions, home based care training, government initiatives, community meetings, weddings and more. Additionally, the hall can be rented out for various functions providing Nakatindi with valuable revenue for the maintenance and operation of the school.
