Sponsorship Programme in Cape Town
The Sponsorship Programme aims to support over 40 children who attend two local pre-schools in the Red Hill Informal Settlement; Red Hill and Children of Hope Pre-School. By providing basic, but nutritious meals for the children, this encourages parents to send their children to school, so they can begin their education, whilst being sustained.
The settlement has been slowly expanding over the last 20 years to house displaced Africans and refugees living in poverty. Approximately 2,500 people live in this area, in houses made from scrap materials such as iron and wood. Many are unemployed, and are unable to provide their children with food or opportunities to receive an education. The Red Hill Pre-School was closed in 2007, and then re-opened in 2008 through a partnership with the Happy Africa Foundation.
Red Hill employs three teachers; Vuyiseka the headmistress, Aviwe and Ntombi, who is also the cook. Vuyiseka has been teaching for over 10 years, and became headmistress of Red Hill preschool in 2008. Aviwe is the youngest and newest teacher at Red Hill, and she is currently attending college part-time, studying Childhood Development.
Children of Hope preschool is run by a mother and daughter, Sophie, the mother, teachers the older 3 -4 year olds, while Maria teachers the younger class of 1 - 2 year olds. Children of Hope has a small but flourishing and efficient vegetable patch, which is looked after persistently by Sophie. All the vegetables that grow are used by the school for cooking.
We want to expand the programme and to help the schools to become self-suffcient. For example, both schools have small areas set aside for vegetable growing, we want to give them an opportunity to establish their own small farms producing enough vegetables to sustain all of the children. By supporting the Programme we will send you some information on one of the children for you to follow their progress through the pre-school. We will also provide you with regular updates on the progress of both schools, to keep you up to date with all their news.
