Books for Africa

Access to books and quality education is fundamental to lifting children out of poverty and giving them a better future. Literacy is fundamental to obtaining decent jobs at fair wages. Unfortunately, there is a severe book shortage in Livingstone prohibiting many from the wealth of knowledge contained in books. The Happy Africa Foundation is teaming up with Books for Africa to greatly increase the availability of books for Livingstone’s youth.

Books for Africa is a well-known name on American university campuses where students often donate their used textbooks to be given to African recipients – more than two million a year. The Happy Africa Foundation is working with other NGOs in the area to get a container of 40,000 books shipped to Livingstone to supply local schools and libraries. A substantial number of the books will go directly to a new library being built in the Nakatindi Health and Education Center. Your contribution would go directly towards shipping, storage and distribution costs to get these books in the hands of local children.

The books will be across subject areas, including: secondary mathematics, primary geography, primary English reading, general reading, fiction, non-fiction and more. These books will be available to countless children throughout Livingstone and used by African Impact volunteers to conduct Adult Literacy classes, reading clubs and classroom instruction.

There are many ways you can contribute. The most immediate way to help advance the project is to donate money to help with the shipping, storage and distribution costs. You may donate books to be added to the collection. You can start a drive at your home university to collect books and funds to aid the program. The total cost of shipping, distribution and providing secure storage for the books is approximately $26,000.
